As of this werk Checkmk will correctly apply the timeout defined in Setup > Users > LDAP > connections > Edit LDAP connection: > Response timeout when performing an authentication request to an LDAP server.

This should allow Checkmk to correctly make use of failover LDAP servers and prevent the site from being locked into faulty connections.
