Tech Session (requires Basic package or higher)

Checkmk 2.0 comes with many new features to build dashboards. Combined with the powerful graphing tools in Checkmk you can visualize the data in your monitoring in manifold ways. In this tech session, you will learn how to build great dashboards and get the most out of Checkmk graphing.

Jan and Mathias will open this year’s conference with an overview of what has been accomplished since the Conference #6 in April 2020. In this opening keynote, you will be informed on how you can actively participate at this conference and give insights into the agenda. They will also discuss the priorities for the next 12 months and our plans for the overall future of Checkmk.

A Checkmk Conference classic: we will fill you in with exciting updates on what has happened around Checkmk since the last conference. Given the recent launch of Checkmk 2.0, this will be focused on its major topics such as User Experience, Automation, Network Monitoring and Performance.

We invite you for a beer or wine as a round-up of the first day of the seventh Checkmk Conference. Typically, we would have enjoyed that together - spending some time with like-minded people is always something, which makes the Checkmk conference special. New times, new solutions - grab your favourite drink and some snacks, enjoy and be part of conversations around how Checkmk evolved, development practices, partnerships, the Checkmk community and where all of this is heading.

Tech Session (requires Basic package or higher)

In this tech session, Simon Meggle from ELABIT will introduce you to the Checkmk extension Robotmk. Robotmk integrates the results of E2E tests with Robot Framework into the Checkmk monitoring. Robot Framework is by far the most popular and versatile Open Source tool for automated application testing and has a huge and active community worldwide. Outstanding concepts of Robot Framework are its "keyword-driven approach" and its expandability with libraries for any kind of testing technology (GUI, web, APIs, ...).

The advantages of synthetic monitoring and the benefits of an integration of Robot Framework tests into Checkmk will be covered. Besides, Simon will explain the architecture of Robotmk, its installation, configuration and features. He will also give insights into the current state of development and planned implementations to deliver a good overview of the different new monitoring possibilities offered by Robotmk.

Jens Dunkelberg from Abraxas Informatik AG will demonstrate how Robotmk is used as an E2E monitoring solution for the application landscape of the Swiss government.

Let’s dive into the upcoming features of the next Checkmk version and showcase what we have been working on already in 2021 and where this it is leading to. Improving the user experience has already been focused on in the last year and in 2021 we strive to deepen our efforts in this area. Learn about upcoming changes in the user interface, and how we plan to make Checkmk even better to use in the next version.

Cloud monitoring is a long-term hot topic and will continue to increase in importance. It is also one of our core development priorities and we are excited to share with you about all the features coming to Checkmk around cloud monitoring.

Checkmk is already being used by many large companies and we continue to see an increasing demand. Therefore, we plan many improvements around security, automation and performance — the most important areas for enterprise-grade monitoring. In this session, you can learn what we have already built in that area in the last months and what we are planning for our next release.

The number of Kubernetes clusters in production environments are increasing rapidly. We will share with you how we advanced our Kubernetes monitoring itself, but also implemented mechanisms for instant deployment and auto-configuration of Checkmk in Kubernetes. Follow us on our path to a "one-click" monitoring of your Kubernetes clusters.

In a traditional Checkmk conference fashion, we will end the conference with a discussion about our roadmap for the immediate future and next years. This shared roadmap will be our perspective prior to having gained your conference input and having spent two entire days with you. During the conference, we will learn a lot about your priorities, which we will subsequently integrate into our roadmap. In this session, we will provide you with a bigger picture of the overall direction of Checkmk.

Workshop information

One of Checkmk’s best feature is the extensibility via check plug-ins and local checks. Both are powerful methods to monitor devices and applications, which are not covered by the extensive built-in plug-in library.
This workshop will teach you how to write your own simple plug-ins.

Prerequisites: Good understanding of Python programming and Checkmk.

You have already written your own check plug-ins and you want to dive deeper into this topic? Learn from our developers how they are writing check plug-ins and ask them all your questions that ever arose concerning this topic.
In total, we will go into the details of the Check-API, walkthrough the migration of plug-ins to Checkmk 2.0 and also learn how to write GUI extensions. This way your plug-ins can be configured properly and their output can be visualized with Perf-O-Meters. In addition, you will learn when and how to write special agents.

Prerequisites: Experience in developing Checkmk plug-ins, good Python knowledge.

Checkmk’s new REST-API opens up new opportunities for automating your monitoring. Automation can make your life easier and offers endless options. In this workshop, you will learn what is possible with the new REST-API and how to get things done more quickly. Configure your monitoring, operate it and get status information.
We will dive deeper into how to integrate Checkmk with several data sources for automation, e.g. CMDBs. We will also look into using the REST-API with deployment tools.
To sum up, this workshop will introduce the concepts behind the API and teach you how to automate things yourself with practical examples.

Prerequisites: programming experience and good Checkmk understanding.

Monitoring is at the heart of your IT. Thus, it needs to be secure. Security expert Ralf Spenneberg will show how you secure your monitoring.
Checkmk offers all the tools to enable enterprise-grade security. Sometimes the options are hidden, not enabled or need configuration. In this workshop, security expert Ralf will discuss the Checkmk architecture in the context of security and will explain and demonstrate the secure setup of a Checkmk installation. The best security practices concerning the Checkmk agent connection, distributed configuration, access via SNMP and special agents, SSL/TLS connections to VMware and LDAP, the certificate store and the password store will be covered by this workshop. There is also time to discuss specific questions you might face in your own set-up.

Prerequisites: none.

Checkmk comes with many powerful features. Among others, there are the Business Intelligence, the Event Console and Notifications. Learn from our Checkmk consultants how to monitor business processes, process logs, and set up alarming and escalations in Checkmk.

Prerequisites: none.

Updating to Checkmk 2.0 is in most cases very simple. There are however best practices you should follow for every major version update. Seasoned Checkmk consultants will share tips and tricks for the update process and present the typical pitfalls to avoid. As Checkmk 2.0 comes with many changes, our consultants will walk you through the important ones relevant to the update process, sharing what to do in each case.
In this workshop, you can also get hands-on support in case you haven’t updated to Checkmk 2.0 yet.

Prerequisites: none.

Good news for American users

We have adjusted our schedule so that users from the American continent can also participate. The presentations start at 10 am ET and are therefore also perfect for the American time zones!

FAQ

All presentations will be streamed live on our website where people can also type in the chat. Polls, Q&As and other interaction options will be done via Slido.

All workshops will be held on Zoom. Workshop participants will receive the login details via e-mail prior to the conference.

After the digital Conference 2020, we were confident that our Conference #7 could be held on site in Munich again. We would have been more than happy to meet the Checkmk community in person.

Since the online format was very well liked by our attendees last year, we initially planned a hybrid version that would have combined the advantages of both. Unfortunately, the development of the pandemic did not allow for this plan either, so we will continue to hold the conference as an online-only event in 2021.

We first offer the premium packages to make the planning of the workshops easier. This allows us to optimize the distribution of seats more conveniently if necessary. Afterwards, we will activate the standard package and thus be able to fill all workshop places ideally.

On the booking page, you first decide on a conference package. The Premium package includes two workshops and the Standard package includes one workshop. Depending on the package, you can now select one or two workshop topics. Please watch the language indication behind the workshop name.

The six workshop topics are available on both conference days. Some workshops will take place only once per day, others will be held several times and in parallel.

To ensure a high quality, the number of participants in the workshops is limited, with individual slots available on a 'first come, first served' basis. If a workshop is sold out, it can no longer be selected.

All workshops will be held in both English and German. Four among the six workshops will be held in both languages simultaneously while the fourth and fifth workshop are organized differently:
For the fourth workshop around Best practices on Monitoring and Security, places are offered in English on June 15 and in German on June 16. Vice versa you can find the handling for the fifth workshop around Monitoring business processes, events and alarming with Checkmk.

After successful booking, payment is made by credit card or bank transfer. You will receive the invoice at the end of the booking month.

The timezone of the dates is Central European Summer Time (CEST).
