Review how common PRTG scaling footprints translate to predictable Checkmk licensing:

Up to 1,000 aspects*

Monitor up to the equivalent of 3,000 Checkmk services, which usually means about 100 devices

€2,280**

year / billed annually

Save up to 40% compared to PRTG Network Monitor

Up to 4,000 aspects*

Monitor up to the equivalent of 12,000 Checkmk services, which usually means about 400 devices

€5,400**

year / billed annually

Save up to 62% compared to PRTG Network Monitor

Up to 6,000 aspects*

Monitor up to the equivalent of 18,000 Checkmk services, which usually means about 600 devices

€7,500**

year / billed annually

Save up to 61% compared to PRTG Network Monitor

Up to 10,000 aspects*

Monitor up to the equivalent of 30,000 Checkmk services, which means about 1,000 devices

€11,700**

year / billed annually

Save up to 39% compared to PRTG Network Monitor

*The above examples are based on the following ratio:
1 PRTG device = 1 Checkmk host = 10 aspects (or sensors) in PRTG = 30 services in Checkmk.
This ratio can vary between different devices and should be seen as an average for simplified plan comparisons.

**The cost comparison refers to selected products: PRTG Network Monitor and Checkmk Pro, as of July 1, 2026, and is based on publicly listed prices on the companies' websites, excluding any discounts, services, or bonuses.

Checkmk Vs PRTG.

How Checkmk upgrades your operational workflow

Checkmk (Self-Hosted)

PRTG Network Monitor

Licensing Model
Predictable, Host/Service-based pricing. Sensor/Aspect-based pricing (a single device can consume dozens of sensors).
Architectural Footprint
Native Linux or Docker deployment; high-density, lightweight resource footprint. Core server requires Windows Server hosting; higher CPU/RAM utilization at scale.
Remote Network Polling
Centralized management via Remote Sites; Checkmk Ultimate include lightweight Checkmk Relays. Requires manual setup and OS maintenance for dedicated Remote Probes at each site.
Triage & Incident Response
Automated dependency mapping that contextualizes alerts to isolate the root cause. Threshold-based sensor alerts; requires manual cross-device triage to connect dependencies.
Cloud & Hybrid Context
Automatic AWS/Azure tag ingestion; dynamic host management for ephemeral Kubernetes lifecycles. Standard cloud API polling; manual grouping often required for ephemeral assets and containers.
Deep visibility. Low overhead.

Move to advanced hybrid IT observability

Your infrastructure has evolved beyond simple up/down status checks. Checkmk provides deep, multi-layered visibility across your entire hybrid estate while reducing administrative overhead.

Predictable, transparent pricing

Checkmk licenses the total number of monitored hosts/services, giving you unrestricted access to every available check and integration.

Auto-discovery & configuration

Checkmk automatically scans your network, identifies devices and their running services, and applies precise pre-set thresholds out of the box.

Secure, distributed architecture

Checkmk monitors remote networks via decentralized Remote Sites. Checkmk Ultimate introduces the Checkmk Relay—a lightweight container that collects data locally and routes it via mTLS without inbound open ports.

Rapid migration. Granular control.

Structured migration without monitoring gaps

Moving from PRTG to Checkmk is designed to be swift and risk-free. Checkmk’s powerful auto-discovery ensures you maintain complete visibility over your infrastructure during the switch, eliminating blind spots while cutting down operational complexity.

Frequently asked questions

Yes. While Checkmk offers a lightweight agent for deep operating system analytics, it includes native, agentless support for SNMP (v1, v2c, and v3). If you are currently monitoring network switches, firewalls, or storage arrays in PRTG using SNMP, Checkmk will automatically discover and map those same data points out of the box.

PRTG uses a sensor-centric model where each metric—or specific group of channels—typically executes on its own individual query interval. When scaling to thousands of sensors, these repetitive, concurrent queries create cumulative disk I/O on the core server’s proprietary database and increase the overall polling load on both systems.

Checkmk utilizes a host-centered, rule-based approach. Instead of sending separate queries for individual metrics, a single Checkmk agent connection fetches the entire state of a host in a single pass (single-pass polling), processing the data in-memory. For agentless monitoring like SNMP, Checkmk employs optimized bulk requests, significantly reducing network traffic and keeping CPU and disk utilization under control across large environments.

Because PRTG uses a sensor-by-sensor hierarchical tree and Checkmk operates on a dynamic, rule-based tag and label system, configuration data cannot be directly copied over. However, Checkmk’s intelligent auto-discovery removes the need for manual migration; network sweeps automatically discover your infrastructure components and apply pre-defined monitoring rules.

Yes. Available in Checkmk Ultimate and Checkmk Cloud, the platform features native OpenTelemetry (OTel) metric ingestion via OTLP. This allows enterprise teams to cross-analyze application performance data against underlying hardware bottlenecks. By utilizing built-in dashboards for RED signals (Rate, Errors, Duration) side-by-side with traditional server and network metrics, system architects can accelerate root-cause analysis.

Available in Checkmk Ultimate and Checkmk Cloud, a Checkmk Relay is a lightweight container designed to monitor SNMP devices and hosts in isolated network segments that the central server cannot reach directly due to firewall restrictions. While Checkmk Pro centralizes configuration across standard Remote Sites, the Checkmk Relay operates as a stateless proxy that initiates secure, outbound-only mTLS connections to send data back to the central server, requiring zero local storage, zero independent data processing, and zero manual database tuning.

Not always. For a small network in a Windows-centric shop that wants an all-in-one, heavily GUI-driven tool with minimal configuration, PRTG's sensor-based appliance can be the simpler fit. Checkmk's edge shows at scale and in mixed or Linux estates, where service-based pricing and auto-discovery keep cost and upkeep predictable as you grow. If your environment is small and unlikely to expand, PRTG's model may be enough.
