Juan, Marketing Data Analyst

Juan Espinosa

You've been with Checkmk since May 2022. How did you originally find your way to us, and what specifically attracted you to the role of a Data Analyst in Marketing?

For 6 years I worked as a data analyst in different digital marketing agencies when I found myself limited for the outcome-based analysis I wanted to do. So I decided to study Data science and my ultimate goal was to mix both worlds: business and data. While looking for jobs, it was fundamental to have the freedom to propose ideas, implement them, and keep learning.

Checkmk was a perfect fit for me because of its culture, flexibility, openness, and predisposition to embrace new challenges.

Skills like Python, SQL, and Machine Learning are prominent on your profile. Which of these tools do you use most frequently in your daily work, and how exactly do they help you analyze marketing data?

At the moment Python is my go-to language to work efficiently. It supports me to automatize recurrent tasks, do pre-processing tasks and perform quality control and analysis on large datasets to bring answers for strategic questions.

With the advancement of AI and the projects we are getting our hands on, I am sure the use of machine learning and SQL will increase.

As a Data Analyst, you play an important role in our go-to-market strategy. Can you give us an example of how your data insights have significantly influenced a specific marketing decision or campaign at Checkmk?

The report was designed to provide a clear overview of the health and performance of our strategies. It has been carefully structured to be easy to read while simplifying the complexities of our products.

To name examples, the report enabled us to identify high-potential markets where resources could be allocated effectively. As we speak, several campaigns are running in these markets. It also uncovered several bottlenecks in our path to purchase that are impacting efficiency. These insights resulted in strategic refocusing, budget reallocation, and ongoing optimization efforts, remaining aligned with our strategic targets.

Marketing and data are a powerful combination. What are the biggest challenges for you when it comes to deriving clear, actionable recommendations for the marketing team from complex datasets?

Despite belonging to marketing, It all requires a deep business understanding as many recommendations go beyond the marketing team. So, always starting with the end goal in mind helps to deliver rich information driving action. When it is time to get hands on the data, the most interesting and challenging part is finding the right harmony between the different data sources to optimize for outcomes.

Checkmk is constantly growing and evolving. How has your work, your scope of responsibilities, or the way we handle data in marketing developed since you started in May 2022?

When I joined Checkmk, my focus was on keeping all the marketing stack. This included configuring GA4, improving our Google Tag Manager strategy, and providing actionable information to the marketing team.

As the company grew, so did our stack, and the scope of my role. I slowly expanded beyond marketing analytics, contributing to cross-functional data initiatives, involving marketing, sales, and management. A strong example of this is the go-to-market report which I implemented and it has become a trusted source of truth for management.

Aside from numbers, scripts, and analyses: What do you enjoy most about working within the Checkmk team, and how do you prefer to unwind after a particularly data-heavy workday?

I love coming to the office. It is the perfect place for deep focus, being in touch with my colleagues and simply sharing the great atmosphere of the company. Also, the flexibility that Checkmk gifts its employees is outstanding and allows me to close my days in the best way possible: either in the gym, swimming pool or dancing classes.
